I plan on making an electric hoist. I have an old Warn winch from my 4-wheeling days and I just need to figure out a decent rigging that won't damage the top. Mount it to a joist in the garage ceiling, run the power suppy to a switch on the wall and should be good to go. Then it makes install and removal a one man job as well.
If you want some really trick DIY hard-top hoist ideas, search around some Jeep forums. Those guys are crazy ingenuitive! Some sites sell the hoists but they're really expensive for just being some straps and a winch or pullies! http://www.hoistlifts.com/bmw.htm http://www.top-hoist.com/Products.html

Hardtop hoist rigging
Jazyjeff -
If I were to try and devise a harness for the hardtop hoist, I might start by taking 2 lengths of nylon webbing and tying loops at each end, 1 loop for each corner of the hardtop. The nylon runners will connect to the hardtop at the loops and to the hoist cable at their mid points. Bend the rear loops around the C-pillar and under the top to hook around the rear bayonet "spike" anchors. Open the front latches, put the front loops into the open jaws of the latches, close & lock the latches. You can connect the nylon runners either front-to-back or side-to-side. Either way you should fix them at the hoist cable to prevent sliding which would unbalanced the top. An alternative to the webbing could be nylon boat line from a marine store like Boat U.S. They could also advise you on the best knot for the loops. Get those right and that top isn't going anywhere! ^^^ That's a good idea! I didn't think about using the latches but I have never seen a hard top in person to know the best way. Once I get one, I'll be sure to make a DIY on whatever hoist I conjur up. Thanks for the ideas.

Oh man, this makes me want to get one now. I'm gonna try to get one before the summer is out since the weather around here is kinda nasty in the Fall/Winter/Spring. There is an AW available in my area but that guy wants $2900! He's trippin!

Yeah, it is really the best of both worlds. I live in the WET northwest and having a convertible does not make much sense...but add the hardtop... And BINGO you have got the whole package.
Every once in a while you get one of those freak warm days in late fall, winter or early spring.. And within minutes, I can have the hardtop off and enjoy the few minutes of sun. People can nit believe that I have a vert for a daily driver. As posted earlier...my old E36 has a new home, but I loved her just the same...(OK maybe not as much)

Don't forget, it's not just top, but you'll need an installation kit for it as well to hook up wiring, etc. I think I've seen them for sale between $1-$2K.

Nice vert and its in excellent shape. I think a set of brand new oem floor mats would compliment your flawless interior.

Also, since I took those pics I have replaced the cup holders with the Euro Tray so that could run a connection for my Ipod. ![]()
