Who makes high quality and quiet universal mufflers?

Who makes the quietest, low-restriction mufflers, with top notch quality in universal sizes? What's your preference and why?

Vibrant. I love the sound of their street version mufflers. The race version sounds ok too but too loud for me.
Inexpensive and good quality.

Magnaflow. I went whole hog and installed a cat back single stainless steel 3" exhaust with Y pipe, 2 inline mufflers and oval tip - high flow, quiet and cheap - less than $1K total.

I was looking for something a little quieter than Vibrant since they use simple straight through glasspack designs. I previously had some that I ended up selling to Aggie46. I will admit the fit and finish on them was great. I am not particularly confident in their long term quality when they charge so little and when I find flaws inside the metal of their exhaust flanges.

Two of my friends had them for 5 years, 120K miles each. It would last forever in California weather

Jim
What model mufflers did you put in there? Any clips?

I'm looking to make the most subtle increase in sound possible. The usual route of 14815 is too loud for my liking.

Does anybody know anything about Flowmaster mufflers and how they compare quality and sound wise to others? I'm really impressed at how their dBX line of mufflers keep a Subaru relatively quiet with just one small muffler connected to a straight pipe.

Interested in the posts here. I, too, am looking for a very subtle increase in sound over stock. I find the Magnaflow and most other setups are far too loud. Looking for something that sounds as loud as a stock 335i at WOT.

edit: This is PERFECT!

My custom 3" setup is one flowmaster in the middle, with a Borla Pro XS at the end. With both mufflers, it's nearly stock quiet. I remove the Borla for competition partly because I lose ~ 8 lbs, but also partly because the Borla reduces down to 2.5" internally. With just the single Flowmaster (and stock catted headers) it maxes out around 86 db @ 100 ft, still streetable if I really want to, but I don't. I'm guessing two Flowmasters or one Flowmaster and one Magnaflow might do well.

I'm sure it would be even quieter with two Borlas in there, but 3" is already less than dual 2.25", I don't really want it restricted, no matter what claims Borla makes about it flowing just fine.

I'm very happy with the Vibrant on my car, with the rest of the OEM exhaust its very comfortable in the cabin. I've posted vids on here and youtube... search e46 vibrant and you should find some soundclips. Had it for 2 years and still great.

Supersprint - a noticable noise increase over stock when making progress and zero drone when cruising (thanks to its helmholtz chamber design).

Have any videos? Or info about what type of Magnaflow?

Magnaflow. You can click on my link above and look at what I used for behind the axle. Or you can measure the space (length, width & thickness) and determine what diameter inlet/outlet you want and go to Summit and buy one for about $100 + ship. I strongly recommend an offset one as they are quieter than a straight-thru.

HTH,
Jim

Magnaflow are pretty ugly in terms of finish and the straight-through glasspack design isn't particularly great for quiet.

That's the reason I don't want one.

My car is like.. absurdly loud. I wanna quiet it down.

100 cell race cats will help, without hurting power much, and without too much weight.

I did a search on YouTube for this member's videos. This setup sounds the best so far. VERY subtle.
