I need to understand a few points.
1. Is this car equipped with the ZHP Performance package? 2. Are you using a BMW specific code reader and it is capable of reading shadow codes? Highly suggest PA Soft BMW Scanner 1.4.0. ebay or www.xcar360.com are some places you can find this software. PA Soft provides shadow codes that may be helpful in diagnosing unusual problems. Suggest you read my comments in this thread - http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthr...340&highlight= I cannot say for sure this is your problem, but I do suspect some cars may be having problems with knock/ping sensors that have aged, possibly cracked internally and are falsely triggering under certain harder acceleration pulls. I am hopeful I can get the knock sensors replaced on my M5 in the next week and solve a nagging problem that I have had for over 1 year. I have the parts here in hand, I just need to find the time to get them installed. I have been methodically been working through any possible issues that could be causing my problem and nothing has made any improvement yet, so I hope I am correct on my problem.

Before you throw knock/ping sensors in the car, you should try to find some ODBII software that allows you to monitoring live date, possibly even graph it.
Probably the cheapest, but not necessarily the best is either an Android based App called Torque or the ODBWiz USB interface. These are not BMW specific There is a free and paid version. Paid is $5 USD, used with an ELM327 Bluetooth interface that is about $22 USD you can get data. Or something like ODBWiz, again, not the best, but for the money not a bad tool. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...00_i03_details http://www.scantool.net/obdwiz/ These tools should allow you to to monitor/graph things like MAF readings and Ignition timing. The other thing you should do it search the forum here to run a real time MAF test. This has you run a full throttle run in 2nd or 3rd gear and monitor the maximum MAF reading. Then you adjust for altitude and air temperature and see if the MAF is reading the correct. If the MAF measurement is way off, usually it means the MAF is not measuring correctly. Incorrectly functioning MAF at high RPM can impact fuel and ignition timing.

I just got finished running the ODBWiz on my M5. So it was able to log a lot of info. I think if you knew the BMW specific ODB PID's you could monitor them and keep track of what they are doing.
The only problem with something like ignition timing, you may need to record a "good" car and compare readings? Not sure how the BMW timing works with the VANOS, however, I had my M5 ignition timing going to -12 degrees under load. Seems a bit strange that it was going that negative?? Would not expect it to go below 0 degrees. I need to check my E46 330cic and compare behavior.
