It's just a lot easier to say Upstate, than "I live in the center part of the state, a little above the PA border". That, and sooooo many people just associate upstate with anything North of the City. If it's not NYC, it's upstate.

Usually I tell people Upstate NY, and if they ask where, I'll be more specific.

EDIT: Ironically, I just realized my Location is "Upstate NY" lol
