Find your best iron skillet, a regular pan, a wooden spoon, and the following: Two sticks of unsalted butter, a cup of buttermilk, not quite a cup of white granulated sugar, a couple of large eggs, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, a cup of all purpose flour, a cup of cornmeal, some shortening, and a pinch of salt or two. Grease the iron skillet with the shortening (don't use shortcuts like Pam or something similarly crappy. Do it right). Turn oven on to 375°. While the oven heats up, on the stovetop: Heat a separate pan to medium heat, toss the butter in there and when it melts, take it off the stove, add the sugar and the eggs and beat to blend well. Add the buttermilk and the baking soda, mix well. Then add the cornmeal, salt, and flour, blend roughly until only a few small lumps remain, pour into the skillet, and place it in the oven for, oh, 30-35-40 minutes or so, you'll be able to tell when it's done, or do the toothpick-comes-out-clean method. Flip it out of the skillet, or pie-slice it and eat it right out of it. This is how I make my cornbread, and not trying to excite you too much, but it's the best damn cornbread you will ever have. Put some honey on it, and ooooooohhhhhhh...
