None of the DIY's out there mention anything about cutting or grinding.
You may want to check your source

Looks like I lied...on the M3 I just had H&R Springs, these match well with the stock shocks.

I was talking about this....
H&R Cup Kit
I had it on my 330Ci, I dont think they make it for the ///M though.

I will try to figure out what product I was thinking about that requires you to grind your front strut mount on the M3. Sean that drives the black M3 here in CLT has them installed on his ride.

I might just rock some coilovers. Some V1 non-adjustable KW's maybe...
Or some FK Silverlines...

Oh ok I know Sean,

I think you're talking about the alignment pin on top of the upper strut mount.
The only reason to grind/drill it off is to decrease camber if you go really low.

That is a common practice for people that go really low and dont want too much camber
