I live in Florida and my jetski and trailer get a little corrosion here and there even though I spray them off after each use in the salt water. What do you recommend to spray to inhibit corrosion on it or it's going to happen and just rinse it off with fresh water?

Surprisingly interesting thread.

I'm building a cooling system for my car which is going to use lots of 6061 and 6063. What treatments offer the best ultimate corrosion protection, most visually appealing corrosion protection, and most economical corrosion protection? The primary areas of corrosion protection were on the exterior of the original aluminum and mild tubing, where the overlapping hoses would trap what I assumed was splashed water during driving. The interior of the original tubing showed zero corrosion after 28 years.

When you say a little corrosion do you mean just surface rust, like your brake rotors after sitting wet for a bit or actual metal loss (pitting, perforation, etc)?

Even outside of the salt water, the moisture in the air down there is going to give you problems and rising doesn't remove all the contaminants. If you're driven to mitigate it, sand down the affected areas, clean well with paint prep then paint away, with the prep being the most important stage.

To be frank, I've never dealt with corrosion protection on any aluminum structure(s) so I'm not really in a good position to offer a solid answer as I do know aluminum doesn't react like the metals I'm used to handling.

Two things:

- Check out NACE.org (NACE: National Association of Corrosion Engineers) and search for 6061 and 6063 and take a gander at some of the resulting articles. I'm a member, so if you find something you'd like to read up on, just contact me and I'll see what we can do. I ran a quick search and saw a few topics that may be worth a read for you.

- I reckon the biggest issues with the joints has to do with the issues of welding aluminum and purity in the rods/filler used along with heat stress the softer metal is exposed tol.

anodize that sh*t, which (ironically, you could say) is corrosion itself.

I have a 2001 BMW 330i with a few rust spots on my quarter panels and both front doors. Is my car covered by the 12 year warranty or not?
Thanks!

Have you taken the car into BMW for it's annual-or-biannual rust checkout? If not; then they won't honor the warranty. That said, we've all seen BMW NA do good-will repairs and if you push for it enough, you might just get a yes (but I wouldn't bet on it).

No clue. I did a quick search on the NACE website and found some studies on the topic but nothing stands out as a new cure-all.

How big is the benefit to painting pressure treated wood with those special stains/ sealers from the big box stores?

Does painting one side(top side) only , make a difference to the lifespan?

It should extend the life some. Any barrier is a barrier against the elements/wear and tear.

Lol, sorry I'm just now getting to this thread again! You know we have better driving roads here, so load up the Auto-x setup and trek 1,220 miles out here Kyle!

To answer your corrosion question; rub poop on it, it'll stop all of your problems.

What would you advise as the best metal for a main housing structure that would be low maintenance and long life-span, in terms of corrosion?
The rusted surface you're discussing is called Corten. It is a pre-rusted panel, and is completely non-structural, so yes they are cosmetic and interchangeable (but somewhat expensive).
