Yeah, the 8500 is way lighter and smaller. The reason is that the V1 is encased in magnesium to make it durable if dropped and to make it VG1 invisible. It's gonna give you a concusion if it flys off the windshield at you. Be sure to hardwire it to prevent this.

There are several versions of the V1. They change the hardware when needed and do the rest through software updates. The V1 is also upgradeable and the 8500 isn't. If you purchase one directly from V1, it will have the latest hardware and software and be as technologically advanced as any other detector out there.

Actually, the Ka detection on the V1 is more sensitive. Read the car and driver review from when the 8500 came out. Granted, it's barely more sensitive and not a practical difference.

As for the arrows and slowing down, you are correct. We all react when the detector goes off. However, only the arrows and a V-1 can provide you with protection in these circumstances. (go read the links):

VG1 in english is a unit that detects that a radar detector is in a car (for those places where radar detectors are illegal).
