I've found myself enjoying this a lot on hot days by the pool:

Even better, take a good wheat bear and mix in some lemonade for a home made shandy.

Have to agree with the above about Pliny. It is a very good IIPA, it's their very limited distribution that feeds the hype.

@325kev, thanks. I think it depends on the year. I had the Avery Maharaja about 3 years ago and thought it was gross, had this funky citrusy blah taste. Turned me off from Avery. I tried the 2011 Maharaja after it was recommended by more than one person and surprisingly it was pretty good. Someone in this thread said something similar about 2010 and 2011 Sam Adams Infinium. I had 2010 infinium and had a "that's it?" moment.

That's going to happen with almost any limited production beer. You never get the exact same flavor batch after batch, that's why brewery's have quality control to make sure it falls within certain parameters. Even hops harvested from the same plant taste different year after year.

Well that's the point of vertical tastings. Although for beer I suppose it depends on the actual recipe and brewing QC than it does on weather and harvest for wine.

Suggestions on beer? Lemonade or 7-Up?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think shandys use lagers. At least the ones I've had were.
