I'm thinking either a compact rifle or handgun as being an ideal apocalypse weapon. Anything too big would suck to have to carry around, or would be useless in close quarters like a car.

I've shot shotguns all my life, everything from pump action 12 gauge's to semi-auto 10 gauge (one of my shotguns that is gorgeous and have ever fired a full auto shotty. If Cali wasn't so AWFUL ATROCIOUS HORRIBLE AND UBER-GOOBER LIKE about gun laws I would have a lot of my zombie guns.

A short rifle (like a like hunting rifle i.e. a little .22 with a scope is one of the best weapons out there. A pistol would always be useful, but only as a sidearm. It's not awesome enough on its own to justify using it as your main weapon. Car travel would make things difficult, but it's the zombie apocalypse, I'm sure we could find a way to make it fit :madmax:

.22 is hard to beat in zombie apocalypse, assuming you can aim really well for the head.

What is the range on a shotgun, anyway? Like say you wanted to hit something really far away, how far could you get?

Maybe it's just my video game experience, but doesn't a rifle with a scope really suck for anything up close? And don't zombies have this knack for getting close to people and trying to eat their brains?

The range is awful but it entirely dependent on the type of shell

Regular bird shot about 40/50 yards, a bit more for buckshot, and slugs can go up to like 150/maybe 200 yards (but the 200 is a very special slug)

A little, but that's why you stay in the back shooting them as they get close OR you shoot them before they get close.

Also if they do get close that's what the pistol is for

200 yards is really really really far away. If there was a zombie at that distance I'd be like "later mate," walk to my car at a leisurely pace, drop my kick, pick it up, start my car, and leave.

Dude, you would be hard pressed to hit a human head sized target reliably with slugs out of a smoothbore shotgun barrel.

Rifled slugs yes, but at that point might as well use a hunting rifle.

I should have mentioned 200 requires both special slug and rifled barrel

Really though when it comes to shotguns the close they are the more damage

lol, it takes a fair bit of effort to find where a laser pointer dot is coming from with a normal human. If your brains were partly eaten, I would think chances are slim you'd find where it ever came from.
