Heating/cooling issue

My wife's 01 325i only blows hot air, despite the tempature setting or outside air temp. Even in the dead of winter if the car is at operating temp...it blows hot air with the setting on the coldest temp. Any Ideas what would cause this? I'm pretty sure the compressor needs freon because it doesn't seem to kick in, but I don't want to try to have the AC serviced until I figure out why I cant change the temp even in cold weather.

Thx

the gremlins are in my wife's bimmer

I forgot to add I did additionally have an svc light due to thermostat issue and O2 sensor (ran like crap) . Local mechanic said to replace thermostat first cause it could cause 02 error code. Replaced thermo, reset light...car ran great, no O2 error light, but thermo error code came back...car doe not overheat or have any other issues.

You can try a recharge of 134a from any auto parts. There is a good diy somewhere on here and youtube that shows how to do it. I have to give mine a shot of refrigerant (134a) every summer. Seems to work for me. It really easy to do.
