A5S 390R-XX 330xi 2003 transmission 1 year only?

Title says it all. I'm considering purchase of a 330xi 12/02 production. Probably has a bad transmission. I've got A5S 390R AWD transmissions on the ground, but I don't have one from that narrow slice of production which the parts catalog shows as 9/02-3/03 production only.

Anybody know the PRACTICAL interchange? I have run into this before with the 2003 325i which also shows a 1-year only transmission and last time I needed one of those I had to buy a complete rolled car to get it. Not a huge deal to do that- I service and part and sell BMWs for a living, but the 330xi is a hell of a lot more rare than a 325i and I can't find any parts donors currently offered at any of the big 3 insurance auctions.

So back to my pondering, obviously, any trans will bolt up, but what about that damn 2-letter suffix, XX, will this car accept a XC or ZQ suffix version? And what the hell is the difference? How on earth would one research that in a practical manner other than ask around at the forum???

Prompt reply is appreciated, car sells this afternoon (its in Denver BTW for anybody who looks at the sales).
