if you want a fast bmw for straight line speed, get a 135i or 335i. i've had one of each, and now i drive a 330ci. you can get over 400 whp out of the n54, for very little money, and retain excellent gas mileage and reliability. i used to clock 3.x second 0-60 runs on my old cars and scare the piss out of passengers.

i realize my e46 will never be like that, and i'm ok with it. the e46 is more planted, handles better, and steers better. don't try to make the e46 something it's not. instead, enjoy it for what it is.

or, pick up an 07 335i for $20K, invest $1,200 in it (tune, downpipes, intercooler), and blow the doors off of most other cars on the road. with the exception of a few cars (z06 vette, nissan gtr, cts-v), you'll happily embarrass most other "fast" cars out there, in an unassuming family sedan or sporty coupe (335i sedan is ultimate sleeper).

don't waste your money on a supercharger or turbo on the e46. too costly, not worth the money, less reliable, etc etc etc
