On the radiator removal...in a manual at least...

I removed the Radiator with ET on it and dealt with the disassembly out of the car.

If you remove the ET first though, I think there are literally only 3 screws holding the radiator in. It lifts out very easily. There are clips you'll see it sits in at the bottom...and then just a few screws...Two at the top corners and then one lower on the left side iirc.

The big thing on the radiator is to make sure you get the right one (auto or manny). The OE originally came with a leveling screw so one radiator can be converted to either auto or manny, but the Behr we get AM doesn't have that...or didn't when I got it anyway.

Anything I'm missing? I've already replaced everything belt related and the waterpump.

^ Water pump pulley, water pump pulley bolts, aux fan switch.

I'm curious as to what you mean by OEM brand expansion tank. You mean Genuine BMW? I'm unaware of any OEM expansion tanks.

Well, I replaced the first two when I replaced the water pump, what does the aux fan switch do?

I have a manual trans if it makes any difference.

Well besides basically being a seal so your coolant/water doesn't leak out, it controls/regulates the aux. fan. It's a must when you replace the lower hose. A $20 no-brainer. Comes with a new seal.

It probably got down-voted by some angry barnyard boys. It's ok, I'll help them too when their cooling systems fail.

I bought my '03 at 140k, I'm at 150k now. I plan on overhauling ASAP, but are there any ways I can check to see if the cooling system is original? I'd like to be able to see if the radiator/water pump/expansion tank have been replaced. Any way to find out by inspecting?

Not really. That's why getting a service history is always desirable.
You could try going to a dealer and having them look up the dealer history in the BMW data bank.

On New Years day I drove home from Redding, CA to San Diego.... As I'm sitting at a street light 3 blocks from my house I hear my water pump go out

Hi everyone newbie over here question about my 2002 coolant system. The water pump went out along with two belts. I am also going to replace the Expansion coolant tank but I do not have $$$ to replace the thermostat right now. Can I wait a month or so to replace this or will I have problems? Also as of right now no hoses are being replaced. The mechanic will know more once the expansion tank is on later today. Does this sound o.k.?

You can't afford an extra $50 to get a new thermostat in there?? yikes.
What's the rest of this repair costing you already?

You could gamble on leaving the thermostat for another month. But it's just that--a gamble. And not doing hoses adds to the risk.
I'd drive very conservatively if I were you and stay close to home. Is that the way you want to live?
