Unable to shift into Drive

I have a 2001 330 ci convertible. Prior to today, I've had no issues with the automatic transmission (car has 133,000 miles). This afternoon, the car starts just fine and shifts into reverse, but will not shift into Drive. I'm at a loss here, as I haven't experienced this issue in the past. Any ideas?

Update

Ok, so I've gotten it to go into drive, though there seems to be some resistance depending upon my technique. If I shift from P to N and then apply force diagonally to shift into M, it will then allow me to shift into M or D. After some cycling back and forth, the transmission now allows a direction downward motion from P to D. Any ideas what may be causing this issue?

Lift up the shift boot. There is most likely a quarter or something stuck in there

Damn I had an issue of going from p to R. The shifter felt sticky and the tranny would make this big thump sound... But if I shift the gear box a certain way all is fine....

well sometimes when you park on a slop, the parking claw would get very tight and hard to get out P.
however, its also possible that the solenoid for D and R are acting up preventing the shifter to get in.

True about the slope but it also has happened while the car was flat.

I took it to the dealer when I first heard of the issue and after thoroughly checking the car and driving it around they came to the conclusion that the tranny could be going out. So they suggested I just wait it out.

the shifter has nothing to do with the transmission, its only a switch.

My Ride: '02 330Ci
Have the same issue with an '02 330Ci but it's intermitent. Took to the dealer and they could find nothing worng. My wife has more trouble with it than I do but I have experienced it every once in a while. Oursa only has 46k miles on it and it's always parked on level surface when it happens. Would love to figure out what it is.

I fixed te problem

I figured out the problem it was the shifter cable. Over time the shifter cable becomes brittle and plastic bushing break and get dislodged in tr shifter assembly. Shifter cable and assembly cost 700 Canadian. I found one at bimmerparts.ca for 120. The car is running perfect. Thanks to my bmw mechanic who does work in his own shop. Any questions let me know
