A/C Is Not Blowing From Vents (HELP PLEASE!)

I have a 2001 330ci Convertible, and my A/C is not consistently blowing from the vents when I signal it to. There are occasional days when it blows, at the lowest setting, but when I crank it up higher, it either goes off, or blows relatively strong at a very odd rhythm (would blow in a pattern similar to the sound of a car that is idling rough - if that makes sense). Most other days, though, it does not blow at all (whether I set the strength level at 2 bars or 6 bars).

In the past (few months), I mostly had an issue with the defroster (at highest setting) that would sometimes turn on and go at full blast, and other times would not turn on at all (sometimes within minutes of each other).

I am in no way mechanical, but could this be an issue with unit that sends the signal to the compressor (e.g., it is not sending the proper signal when I tell it to)? Could it be a belt of some sort (e.g., sometimes the belt doesn't rotate, and when it does, it does so in a weird manner)?

I would like to try and get as much input so that I can offer the most guidance possible to my local repair shop (hopefully cut down on the "exploratory time", and therefore, the size of the bill).

Any input/advice is much appreciated!

If you tell your repair shop what you typed here and they are at all familiar with E46 BMWs, they will know what is wrong before you finish.......

If you would like more info do a search for FSR aka Final stage resistor. That controls the blower fan speed and they are a common failure.

Thanks SammyV and Shanneba!

Any idea how much the part is (or more precisely, the part number)? Is this an easy repair for any competent repair shop?

EDIT: Here is the information that I've accumulated:

Tip: Someone suggested that "Bentley says this is the time to spray AC cleaner inside evap housing to take care of the funky smell so many of us have through the AC."

REALOEM apparently reports the part # to be: 64-11-6920-365

RealOEM.com is a great site to find part numbers.

Check with just about any of the sponsors here for a much better price.

It's an easy repair for you if you have a couple of hours and probably $10 in tools.

Solidjake just did a diy vid on this...without naked women handing him tools unfortunately!

This is a great time to see what you can do!

BTW, this is the time to spray AC cleaner into your evap housing if you've noticed any funky smell coming from vents when you turn on fan.

...and it's like 99% fsr, according to the 10,000 posts on this.

I can hear my Compressor/Fan working and I'm getting cold air around my legs but the top vents and adjustable vents are not putting out any air at all cold or warm....is that the same issue?
