New headlight recommendations?

Howdy all. I have a 2001 3.25i with regular headlights. I want to put newer style headlights on my car, the ones with projectors and Hid bulbs in em. Can you guys tell me If I go ahead and buy 2003-5 headlights, will they fit on my car ( oem)?
Is there aftermarket options ?

very nice stuff you posted thanks, but i am actually looking for "plug and play" type of stuff, like just buy it and use it???

I would like to take this thread to thank SolidJake for the write up. I am a new owner of a 2002 330Ci and was going to do the easy H7 HID set up...until I read your very good post. I will save up and go for the H1 Retrofit kit. $270 w/o shipping is a solid price and I will have them throw in some standard angel eyes in there too.

My mechanic HATES aftermarket xenons has they are always more trouble than they are worth, in fact he stopped installing them in his shop. I will pick up this set and ask him to install for me as I do trust his work and only take my car to him.

So thank you again for getting to the point and saving us newbs lots of time researching.
