Exclamation I can Hear my valves clap

My '02 330xi M54 motor sounds like a diesel engine. It's normal for me between oil changes (8K miles or sometimes full interval when the car tells me)to put in a qrt of oil when the yellow oil light come on after shutdown. the light comes on no after shutdown like normal but the car sounds like a diesel, I can hear the valves clapping. Could that be lack of oil ?? I have not check the level yet because i just shut it off so I figured let me ask on here before I do plus its 93 degrees outside I want to duck the heat for a little bit.

could it be heat ??
Lack of oil ??
Coil Pack ??

Oil used: Castrol Edge (Syntec) 5W 30

There are so many more things that can "clap" or tap or rattle in your car that you cant even imagine.

Guarantee you its not your valves, lol. Thats very unlikely to say the least.

If you want a free diagnosis over the web from self proclaimed BMW specialists then make a high quality video and let us all watch it. Post in the General forum.

If , however you dont want a diagnosis from self proclaimed BMW specialists but much rather take advice of experienced BMW technicians , you should pay a few bucks and get a proper diagnosis from BMW shop.

I strongly suggest the latter

Take a video of the noise, without talking, and only if you have a decent video camera. That would include a modern smart phone or any fairly new handheld camera.

If it is your valves keep the oil full, low oil will certainly aggravate valve clatter. Also consider an oil additive like LubroMoly Mos2 anti-friction which is a favorite of people who track their cars to keep the valves happy and quiet. Oil like Mobil 1 0w-40, Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 Full Synthetic or Motul X-Cess 5w-40 are more likely to keep your motor quiet than BMW 5w-30.
