I think you just have to go to the store and see what catches your eye. I don't think I've ever bought a tie online, other than my Cordial Churchman bow ties (which aren't available in stores and are individually hand-made).

stick to unique colors, minimize funky patterns until you're confident.

How does Paisley go with vertical stripes? I like both colors of this tie but I need a yellow tie. I will need a red one down the line.

They are different enough patterns that they should be able to work fine.

The only paisley tie I have is one that I got back in 1991. It's an ancient madder tie and ties a fantastic knot. The paisley is really muted (lots of brown and deep burgundies).

I mean this in the most helpful way possible...don't do this combo. Wear a solid shirt with pattern tie or pattern shirt with solid tie. On a young dude, more aggressive combinations look bad 99% of the time. There's just something off putting about a young in an aggressive shirt/tie combo. Add in the walnut shoes and it's going to be too much.

Plus, you'll have less versatility in your wardrobe if you have busier pieces.

I personally prefer all solid shirts with patterned ties.

I started off with really fancy shirt and tie combos and then ended up buying a lot of solid and simpler patterns because loud ties were too difficult to match with most of my outfits

Fortunately, I'm very very old, so I'm not restricted by such rules.

I have solid blue or white shirts I could wear with it. Do you guys have any examples/recommendations for something I could wear with the striped shirt?

Just get ties with very subtle designs...ones that look solid from far away but have a slight design up close. Or, polka dots.

Our dress code has relaxed a bit recently and I'm now comfortable wearing boat shoes or similar (obviously not when I'm outward-facing). Of course, I really wanted some pair of handmade unlined shell cordovan Rancourts, but spending that sort of money on boat shoes is not smart, unfortunately.

So my next thought was a pair in navy. But then I found these, which are very interesting looking, available in my size, and on sale. My only concern is that they might be a bit loud and thus not versatile. They'll mostly be worn with very light tan (almost white) and baby blue pants.

They're lined, which is not what I had hoped for, but I guess that's okay. Realistically I never wear shoes sockless anyway.

Yay/nay?
