This message board is filled with E46 issues

Just an observation, but I can tell you I have owned many different cars/trucks and have hung out on the many different forums for each of those cars/trucks which were much older then the E46. I have to say that I have never seen so many posts about problems/issues with the E46 as compared to those vehicle forums. If this car wasn't so damn fun to drive, people would think you were crazy to own one after visiting this site.

It sucks that I'm dealing with some of those issues/problems now with my E46 but when I get behind the wheel I feel it is worth it to keep the car up and running. If this was any other vehicle I probably would have a for sale sign on it by now.

In part, its the issues that keep me interested in e46s.
I'm a bit nihilistic though.

Who the Hell posts to say everything is running fine? If you don't have a problem, there is not much reason to be in the General forum. Maybe it is the structure of the forum that is different. There are hundreds of posts a day in the Showroom, Wheels and Tires, etc forums, and maybe the other forums you looked at had everything rolled into one forum.
Either that, or we are just some sadistic SOB's..

+10

There have been two E46s in my family.

My 2006 320ci
and my brother's 2000 323i

Strangest thing is that we've had no problems with either. I think it's a matter of a lot of younger members here (I'm a younger member too) don't keep up with their maintenance and servicing. Hence the warning lights, hence the clunky sounds and hence the forum posts.

Which reminds me, I'm due for a 20,000 km interval service!

I concur! You see this with anything you look at reviews for online, people love to hate, so are only motivated to ***** about their stuff instead of post positive reviews.
The other point I'd like to raise, is I feel like with my bmw's when even the smallest thing is wrong, I have to fix it. As opposed to the non bmw's I've owned that when something is wrong, it's just like w/e as long as it still runs.

Like when I replaced the screw caps on the plastic valve cover. I mean who the hell else would care about that, but bmw or maybe Merc or of course exotic car owners. haha

the people that are experiencing the most problems bought the car cheap 2nd, 3rd or more hand and the cars likely havent been maintained perfectly

in fact each of the folks that posted in this thread (except the guy from Vic) has a car 10+ yrs old

Dude.. the NEWEST E46's are now 6 years old, most of them are 7+ years old, some as old as 13 years old. The vast majority have a ton of miles on them at this point, and have fallen to their 3rd-4th-5th owner, often some kid who beats the living crap out of the old dog, after the first several owners maintained it like crap. And nobody's posting here who doesn't have an issue. I'd maintain that they are MORE reliable than the typical car of the same vintage and mileage. The common issues are few and easily addressed. You won't read about cars with grenaded motors, blown trannies or rear ends, etc. Just the usual ****.

Way off base.

Most of the new threads are of identical issues, just being repeated

I took a little look around my neighborhood for 10+ year old cars and there are not many around. The most 10+ cars are BMW's, Mercedes and Volvo's, most of the BMW's are either E46's or E39's (majority=E39). I left the Dutch BMW forum because there was almost never anybody on it, only when winter and summer comes there is a little activity. To me that proves that the BMW's over here have been very reliable even though most cars are at their 3rd or 4th owner. Maintaining it seems expensive but it really isn't if you consider most of these BMW's can still be driven for 25 years. I doubt the newer generation cars (including BMW) will last that long.

Its not that these cars have a lot of issues, its that people on this board are too lazy to search, and post the same questions OVER and OVER again. Plus, most of the people posting this stuff are 17 year old's with 1999 323i's trying to figure out how to put gas in the car.....
