Which code readers? Are they BMW code readers or generic OBD-II readers.

Generic code readers. I went to AutoZone, O'Reilly's and my friends reader.
It use to be able to read the codes. |

Generic code readers should work. Like the previous post says ignition must be ON. Not Accessory. ON. There is a DME update required on some cars to get reliable OBD-II operation on certain production run. I think that was only on some M3s.

Yes, the key is on ignition.
Also, the autozone and o'reilly guys tried to get a reading and it failed. I tried the reader on our other car and it works. |

Your profile shows you have a 2000 model year car.
Do you have the round connector under the hood? If so, likely you may need to try to connect under the hood with a round pin adapter and/or you may have a wiring problem with your underdash connector.

Well I guess fortunately for me the service light went off.
I just received the Peake reader, but I may send it back to Amazon for a refund if the service engine soon light doesn't come on. I hit the 200k barrier today..... |

On MY2000, you need to use the round diagnostic port under the hood.
