What makes the manual trannys fail
I have a 2001 325i with 215xxx miles and see that other people with that high of miles have replaced their tranny. What fails to require replacemnt?

probably syncros lose their ability to grip. excess play, etc. used trannies are cheap anyway

Usually, the throw-out bearing, synchros, and maybe some detent springs. But if you don't grind gears and kept up with the fluids, manual tranny's last a good long while.

are you sure you're not mistaken about the manual transmission failing and not just needing a new clutch? as mentioned, worn sycros are about the only thing you hear about.

My manual tranny had to be replaced at 15,000 miles (under warranty right after I bought it). Seems the previous owner didn't know how to drive a stick :-). I haven't heard any issues indicating these things fail commonly. Yours has done well if you have 215k miles.
