I very strongly dislike ostrich leather. I also dislike reptile leathers of all kinds.

I have authored a comprehensive list of times when it is acceptable to wear ostrich leather shoes:

1. When you are an oil tycoon; or
2. Never.

I agree with half of that list.

Oil tycoons can totally wear ostrich.

If they also talk like Yosemite Sam.

I have never heard of a reason why "exotic" skins are better than any other material. They are the "ed hardy" of leather wearers.

Edit. Kangaroo is better for motorcycle gear. I wear that.

They're better because other people don't have them.

Since I care way too much about boots, I thought I'd give my thoughts on AE's new offerings.

Eagle County: pleasantly surprised. The proportions are good, and this is AE's first successful trip into the world of work boots. Would prefer to have had the black version on a non-red sole. If I didn't already have something to fill this niche, I would really consider buying this.

Long Branch: I'm not sure about the proportions on this one. It looks like it's the same upper as the North Platte, which was a bit weak looking due to the proportions of the wing tip. Nice to see them using Vibram soles. The dark brown is a nice option, though I think the gray leather is a mistake.

Haight: decent idea gone horribly wrong. Proportions are off. Sole and medallion are incongruent. Just look at the train wreck side profile.

Cronmok: awful name for an awful boot. They try another balmoral, but make it out of entirely casual materials and styles. I just don't get it.

Great write up.....the Eagle County isn't too bad, but I'm not really in the market for that type of boot. The Long Branch, I think, would be better if it came in some different leathers....I do like the red laces, though. I'm not a big fan of pebble leather and that gray leather makes it a total abomination. Agreed on the Haight and Cronmok. People on SF are going nuts over the Cronmok, and I think it looks really goofy and mis-shaped.

In any event, now that the fall boots are out, I'm about to place an order for some Walnut Daltons. None of the fall line up really grabbed my attention, boot wise.

Edit: What's going on with that side shot of the Haight? It looks like someone bent it from heel to toe.

The Cronmok is hideous and anyone who says otherwise is wrong.

The Haight...beats me. For one, our you stood flat on the heel, your forefoot wouldn't even touch the ground. Also, it's apparently designed for morbidly obese people with swollen ankles.

I'm sure that's an increasingly large consumer group.

(Pun intended).

Meh. I think it's just an ugly design, regardless of material.

i think it would do it justice tho... shell on a bal boot always looks best IMO, especially #8... but I agree, that boot needs to be a perf cap, not a dwarf wing tip... blah

I have nothing to add to the present conversation. All my boots are of the clunky outdoors variety.

Oh, sure. But I don't really have anything to say about these kinds of boots. I'm not really a fan, personally, although I think others in this thread pull them off nicely.

I do love those. If I didn't have my GTs I might consider those. But I only need so many ankle-high non-hiking boots.
