Could have saved some forum posts if you'd addressed the point that I made over and over about you appearing to have an unjustified aversion to online retailers. Every time you refuted one of my points incorrectly (money vs trust, absolute trust) I addressed it immediately so there was no confusion. But I rambled on about how I didn't have an issue with online vs offline merchants and you didn't correct me. It sounds like your saying you don't have an issue with online retailers just buying things in general if you can't see them first.

You made a comments about having no faith in the internet and about there being shady sellers online and not spending money on online retailers when all those points were basically besides the point. You really just don't like buying things you can't see. That's why I was confused.
It's a combination of all those things, I wasn't drifting away from my point.

Anyway, did you take the Greyhound or the train when you came down here? I don't know how early I should be for this.

Pretty sure I used http://www.amtrak.com/home

It ended up being a combination. There were dozens of different choices but I chose to train the majority of the trip and only bus the last 2 hours. REALLY happy I did cause the 7 hour bus ride would have been hell.

Online and even traditional consumer product marketers would be well served to read this discussion as an atypical debate between the two sides of the coin in terms of storefront physical vs online. Ultimately I think the Apple model owns all of course... Brick and mortar aimed at low overhead high profit (services and accessories) backed by unique online services (build to order and iTunes).

The one major concept not addressed here and tightly related to trust is the notion of disintermediation per break/fix etc, and availibility of needed on demand services. As in, if thing breaks, who can I depend on to fix it, and not require me to mail it to Taiwan to do so. Again, for Apple that's where in store genius bar owns, but for other items, especially less expensive or in demand items I think it's the big question.

Personally I try to do business locally when they can compete on price based on this last issue (need this fixed and want it now) but with local fast becoming a big store outlet vs hardware or electronics specialty store it only pushes me further toward ecommerce.

The big question... With the increased need to mail stuff everywhere to get fixed/returned how has the USPS not figured out a way to broker special deals with retailers and save its ass in the process?

Let the bickering begin anew please...

One interesting thing to note is that Apples retail business averages around 2 billion while their online sales average around 9 billion. But there is a different benefit to having the customer service which isn't reflected in the numbers. That's why I specifically gave a nod to Apple (and radio shack).

Well I'm pretty sure that's exactly what Amazon and Zappos has done with UPS or whoever their carrier is. Well who knows what Amazon and Zappos have worked on on their end. I'm sure they do have highly discounted rates for them with all the business they do. Ideally though, what matters is that the customers aren't worried about shipping. That's what Amazon and Zappos has done really well. Make it essentially a non-issue.

With Amazon I believe it's if you buy anything from the apparel department (shoes, clothes, bags - basically all the type of stuff Zappos sells) from Amazon with free shipping or Prime, you return whatever you want for free. And Zappos is like Costco. They don't give a fk why you are sending it back. You send back anything and they pay for it, no questions asked (as long as it's in like new condition). And that's a big reason why they are both doing so well.

Now if your asking why don't all online retailers have free return shipping, I'd assume it's similar to asking the question "Why don't all box retailers have Costco's return policy". Not all business can afford to eat that much cost.

I did...for a dollar!

I just wanted to know if it's anything like flying. I love public transport...just not here in LA. Also, I will be riding for 7 hours, but it will be at night, so I will be asleep. In case the bus is really that uncomfortable, I've been exhausting myself through the day with a combination of laundry, cleaning the garage and moving heavy stuff out, tuning my bikes, mini-detailing the Z4 before it's sold, fapping, and job hunting. So in any case, I'd be too tired to notice all the little foibles anyway.
