Oil level conumdrum

This might be a noob question....

I just did an oil change on my 2004 325ci.

Following bentley's manual, my engine's oil capacity should be 6.5L

However, I just put in only 6L of oil (5L big container + 1Qt small container), and when I checked the dip stick, the oil level is already past the max.

For reference, my oil level would be near the number "1" in this picture of the dip stick

Anyone know what's going on here?

did you check the level when it was cold or warmed up?

Did you wipe it first then dip it again to check it?

If you haven't started the engine yet, then all the oil that should stay in the filter and oil passages will be down in the crankcase. After you start the engine and it fills the oil filter and passages, there will be room for the remainder of the oil.

Good point, I checked right after putting in the oil, and didn't start the engine. And also my driveway isn't exactly level. I'll have to wait till I drive it to work and check again.

But I think that should solve this mystery.

One. You are in the USA, your car takes 6.9Q, not 6.5L
Two. You are in the USA, you cannot buy a 5L jug of oil anywhere in the state of California. You bought a 5Q jug of oil. You added another quart, making the total of 6Q.
Three. Your car takes 6.9 quarts of oil, you can use all 7 quarts that come out of the 5Q jug, plus two 1Q bottles.
Four. If you put in 7Q, and the stick is giving the wrong reading, then the stick is wrong.
Five. The oil on the stick in the pic is not past the max., indeed, it is barely past the minimum.

The bottom mark is the one nearest the end of the dipstick, the upper mark is the one nearest the handle of the dipstick. The oil in the pic is nearer to the tip of the dipstick than it is to the handle, so your oil is at the minimum level, not the maximum level. This holds up because you have put in 6 quarts so far, you need one more.

I believe that the photo is not of the OP's dipstick.

In any event, OP, you have enough oil in the car to start it and drive to work/around the block or whatnot. Do that, then check the level after the car has been run. Top up as needed. Likely, your dipstick reads fine. jdstrickland's suggestions assume that you drained your oil completely - but, being on a slanted driveway, you may not have. If you're really worried about it, I believe dmax has some things to say about checking the accuracy of the dipstick

I actually do, but the OP is close if he knows exactly how much oil he put in and how much he drained! The point above about not knowing how fully you drained is a good one.

6.9 qts. = 6.5L I like to use Ls since it's easier to get that .5 than it is the .9...so I'm not such a loyal citizen, I guess!

Drive a little, let car cool on level ground...in a.m. the level will tell you if you need to add more or not...I suspect you will need to a little bit.
