My suggestion would be to buy an external hard drive (not a usb) and transfer on there and then back onto the new harddrive.

Edit: just realized you found ypur solution lol

I'm going to piggy-back on this thread:

bought a new computer earlier this year and recently decided to either purchase an external drive for back-ups or an internal hd for a RAID 1 setup. Current drive is 2TB, but storage used is about 1/4 of that. Thoughts / preferences? Seems a little overkill to get another 2TB when I'm not using anywhere near that space.

RAIDs are for high availability but cannot guarantee that either drive will survive a, say, lightning strike. You'll still lose data if both drives failed at the same time. So if your purpose is purely backing-up, I would go for an external drive.

If you are worried about backups I would choose an external company, for example carbonite. Whats the point of backing up your data if your house burns down or if someone breaks in and takes your pc.

I use carbonite for online backups. I think its about 60.00 a year.

I use a portable external hard drive that I back up weekly and put in a waterproof fire safe. RAID is great for corruption issues or mechanical failures but, as said, do nothing for lightning strikes, theft, house fires, floods, hurricanes, tornados, acts of god, etc...
