323i Ticking Sound
Hi,
Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong section. If so just let me know and ill move it as quick as I can. My 1999 323i is making a ticking sound when in neutral. It sounds like its coming from the right side under the hood, but I could easily be wrong. It disappears when I put my foot on the clutch, and I've noticed that it starts about 1 min after the car starts for the first time. To clarify my last sentence, when I turn the car on first thing in the morning or after a few hours of non-use, the sound will slowly fade in a be at its loudest after about a minute or so. It will then continue as long as the clutch is not depressed. I can only hear it when the car is in neutral, but it may also be happening in other gears and I simply can't hear it over the exhaust. If anybody has any suggestions that'd be great. I have read a few forums regarding the release bearing, and about getrag rattle. Thanks, Jonathan |

This solved my problem. When I bought the car it had a lightweight flywheel installed, thus making the noise.
