I'm the 3rd owner on 108K on the clock. All SoCal. The 1st owner had a lease. But a few thousand miles of ownership, he had a run-in with another vehicle on the right rear. Not too bad of a damage. But the paint by the body shop was horrible. All maintenance done by dealership. 2nd owner with extended warranty also had maintenance done by dealership and by a indie. However, the car was parked under the sun and possibly never had any shade except under a tree. He had a lousy paint job with the front valance due to all of the road pitting. So, when I got her, she was up on all jacks for more than a month doing all maintenance, replacements and cleaning. Now, she is just like new and start new all over.

I'm the 3rd owner, 130 thousand ks on the clock. Had to replace all the tyres because they were all inflated to 1.5 Bar (18 inch low profile tyres...), fixed an oil leak, coolant leak, still got a leaking window washer strainer.

I wanted to super-murder the PO's of my e36. The list of stupid **** they did to the car was mind-boggling. The PO's of my e46 though, I'd like to shake their hands, well... I did get to shake the hand of one, but not the other. My e46 had 2 owners before me, and they kept meticulous notes of all work done to the car, all the major work was done by a BMW dealer. 109k on the clock now.

Cars are designed to be abused. The fact that they're extremely drivable considering how most drive cars is nothing short of a miracle.
Just think of your airbag system. If they didn't include as much safety and redundancy as they do, do you think the average driver would allow that system to work right?

Would you slap your female-owned, gently driven E46's previous owner?

At the end of the day they are still cars, they are a utility device..
I take care of mine to keep them running. If I can keep them looking good its a bonus. Probably an age thing, in my 20's it was about how the car looked, by the time I hit 30 got into road racing and street cars just didn't matter. Now I like tuning cars, don't car much about actually racing others.. life goes on... Dave |

road rash on the bumpers, needed a new alternator, paint was a bit rough needed a window regulator, VCG was leaking, maintenance wasn't up to date, suspension needs an update, CSB and guibo were bad headlights were wired wrong...and THERE WERE 3 DIFFERENT TIRES ON THE CAR WTF!?!?...but you know what? I've fixed all of this besides the paint being a bit hazy, VCG, and guibo (trying to figure out if the paint can just be detailed to be fine, not very versed in the paint world, need a guibo and waiting for vanos seals now before i do the VCG), all of this, including the spark plugs vanos seals and vcg waiting to go in, cost me...400? if THAT? I payed 3500 for the car, hell i paid 4000 for my 05 CIVIC (though its mint), granted this has 166k miles, but in my hands it will last quite a while longer, and is shaping up into a truly remarkable car as is. I'm beyond happy with my purchase, paying that much for a car that can literally put a smile on your face every time you look at it or get behind the steering well is WELL worth it, and I'll probably be buying an m3 to fix up when this ones mint just because I won't be able to switch off the inner repair man this brought out in me, lol.

I don't see a problem buying one with users if you have the cash and time to put it back in great shape, depending on how much you payed for it.
