My Ride: e46
Strange metallic knocking noise while driving.

I had been dealing with the over heating issues at first and after that came this mysterious knocking metal noise from my driver side rear wheel that only happened when driving over rough roads or speed bumps. It started out of the blue and literally overnight. After driving around with it for a couple of days it started to drive me crazy. So I raised up the car and did what I thought was a pretty thourough inspection of the rear right wheel but found nothing. Then I took it into a shop had a mechanic drive it and raise it and even he couldnt find anything that would be causing that noise. Finally after about 2 weeks of dealing with that horrible noise I took it back to the shop talked to a different mechanic and asked if he would take a look at the car. He did and boy did he find what was causing the noise. It was a broken rear strut mount! My heart about jumped out of my chest. I had heard and read some horror stories about instances where similar broken strut mounts caused the whole shock to come through the trunk. Thankfully that didnt happen with mine. Total for parts and labor was 86.00 dllrs and I am happy to report that she is back on the road running the way a bimmer should. So to all of you who are out there reading this thread take it from me sometimes a third look by a third pair of eyes is all you need! Hope this helps at least one of my fellow fanatics.
