It would be helpful to know what model and year/month of production. (should be on the drivers door jamb)
Generally the 323/328 models have the MS 42, the early 325/330 have the MS43 (until 03/2003) after 03/2003 they used the MS45. The M3 used the MSS54 ECU.

I searched and couldn't find anything. My Bentley shows that the same engine might have a couple different DME versions, and although the codes might vary slightly, usually they pretty much mean the same thing. There are some exceptions, I'm sure, but I don't think that many.
The codes you listed in your other thread probably mean what you think they mean...probably. I'm sorry to have been so exacting in my response in that thread...didn't mean to get you to a dead end...I didn't think it would be that difficult to find DME version. I also searched to see if there's a way to see this on the cluster test, but seemingly not. You might try the 'what factory options' thread...some fanatics can run your vin and maybe it'll come up with DME version. I'm sure some fanatic will wander by knowing what your engine probably has as a dme...maybe change thread title (M43 DME version?) and include year/model/engine in the first post?

01 RMFD Basic control unit DME BMS 46/ FLASH 1 12141430941 $1,186.02
Doubt this will help. You might need a 'real' computer to hook up, as I'm sure it'd read the dme version...but again, I don't think you need to be that exacting usually.

Maybe you can determine the DME version from this link (the 316 was not imported into the US)
Probably a BMW BMS 46 DME... http://www.usautoparts.net/bmw/engines/4cyl.htm

wouldn't a dealer be able to hook it up to the BMW diagnostic comp and tell you? (they'll probably charge though)
