High pitched whine

First off, I'm not crazy. I had a coworker hear this sound. This happens ONLY when my air conditioning has been running for about ten minutes, and stays for about 15 minutes after it is shut off. It is a high pitched whine from under the car just as it is coming to a stop. Brake pads and rotors are 6 months old and I dismiss the brakes any way since there is no sound unless the air is on. It literally sounds like the brake pads are gone, and people standing around seem to be shocked at how loud the noise is. I can't imagine what this has to do with the air conditioning unit, or that it seems to continue until something warms back up after it is turned off. Anyone have an idea?

That's a new sound to me, but I'd take a hose and stick it down by the compressor clutch...and the tensioner pulley. If it's the clutch, replace the pulley anyway.

I hope it's not the compressor, but if you haven't had it serviced in a while, you should have the system evacuated, vacuum tested, and refilled properly with 134a and oil.

I haven't done any work myself on the ac compressor/clutch, but believe it should be pretty straightforward if it's the clutch.

I'll return with realoem.com diagram for ya!

Doesn't appear that the clutch for mine is separate...but search for yours...and here. I'm sure that clutch can be found separately...at least, I hope so!

See post #8...there's that relief valve which might be the sort of thing that would whine for a bit after shutdown (not sure if you meant car or AC...but in any case, sounds like it would vent high pressure off. That this could be a sensor thing--high/low side pressure sensors aren't both working...something like that.

I'm just making this up, mostly...I'm not a mechanic!

Thank you. If I discover anything I can post it. I just meant that the sound continued after I turned off the air. It really sounds just like the brakes are screeching when I stop and ONLY happens with the air conditioning on. And it definitely isn't the brake because no air conditioning, no screech when I stop. Very strange.
