The radio unit can be put anywhere, trunk, inside the dash, etc... Then instead of clipping in the faceplate, you solder in wires and remotely mount the much thinner faceplate anywhere you want. Ceiling, center console, door, etc... Allows you to put it someplace more concealed and possibly easier to access. Maybe if you were clever, even reuse the faceplate of an OE unit.

I'm not really sure where I could put the face plate that would look any better, because then it leaves a big empty place in the middle of my upper center console, which would probably look equally as bad.

Meh, aftermarket radios don't stand out nearly as bad in the 190E as they do in the E46 with the built in radio.

Swapping an M3 motor into a 325i sedan. He's totally doing it wrong to get girls. I bet a 323ci with aftermarket wheels and a stick shift would get him more. Hmm... by that reasoning kyle should be getting tons.

Your idea of using the OE faceplate is common in cases where people don't want to ruin a perfectly restored interior with a modern unit. I believe Mechatronik does this as well.
