Oh man, thank you for keeping me busy. Now I have to tackle this, and "butterfly" sound in the back part of the driver side door panel, and "clunk" noise when closing passenger door. If I don't fix all those sounds, I'll be going nuts.

On a more serious note, thanks for a great DIY, I will be attacking this as per your instructions very soon.

Huh? The trim on the side of the seat gets scratches from people kicking it and the like. Look at yours- I'm sure it has some scuffs.

Nice DIY, my armrest is squeky free now!!

Only problem im facing now is the upper armrest wont fall into the down part. The button is still working, but i think it does not reach the hole were the clip should fall in.
When i push them hard against each other clip falls in half. I think i should remove some of the foam strips in upper part.

I had some trouble putting mine back together again, specifically with the springs. Mine keep pushing out against the plastic covers, causing then to creak. And are the springs supposed to force the two halves of the tray together?

The spring thing is DelMarco's DIY. The springs help flip up the armrest when you push the button, me thinks. Insert spring, grab with needle nose pliers, twist spring (clockwise) then insert into groove. Really simple.

Not sure what you're talking about... hmm.. maybe a picture? Yeah the gasket i used is highly compressable. I'm not even sure it helped my case but I had it already and figured why not. I actually bought it for the front door at home because cold air is getting in but havent gotten around to doing that.

yep you should be tightening the coil of the spring when reinstalling. not loosening. so it springs open

Has the creaking returned for any of you who have done this mod?

be very gentle with everything. the plastic that holds the springs can break if you're too rough.

Thanks for this DIY - it helped me out a lot recently when I did mine.

Personally I used electrical tape inside the top section of the armrest as that's what I had to hand, and I did not do the bottom section since I could not get it apart and did not want to break it.
I have found this has eliminated at least 95% of the noises, which is good enough for me.

the armrest. i've never encountered an e46 armrest that doesn't squeak. maybe you aren't that in tune to how every single atom of every fiber of every part of your car behaves?
