Isn't Tirerack a sponsor on the forum? Maybe if someone PMs the forum contact, they might be able to clarify.

If you get a list from tirerack send it to the ACCC to investigate, that is a restraint of trade

I work seven days a week and I work in a job that requires me to have a presentable newish car. I also like beach camping... and old BMW's (My E46 sucks). That leaves me with the E46, the E34 and a Hilux.
Not much I can do about that ![]() A few members of the BMW club have correspondence indicating that they can only send certain brands. I do remember Hankook being one that's banned, because it was a favourite tyre in the club.

not surprised about Hankook, we deal with Hankook at my workplace. Let's just say they'll try to get away with whatever they can.

If Tirerack has changed its shipping policy and doesn't want to ship to Australia anymore, that's a different matter. However I don't think legally any company in Australia can stop someone importing goods from an overseas company that is willing to sell to them. To do so, I believe a new law would need to be passed and an amendment to the free trade agreement would need to be made.
I would love to know what margins the local tyre retailers have on the tyres they sell. Before we have those facts it is just speculation. |

correct.
Bruce Burnett - sales manager has confirmed they can now only export the following brands - Dunlop, Goodyear, Kumho and Sumitomo He reccommend the Dunlop Sport Z1 Starspec as the closest match against the Bridgestone RE-11's... Looks like ill have to go through a forwarding company, anyone have any reccomendations from past experience?

They are justifying lowing the tax free rate by saying it will encourage people to buy Australian and level the field for local retailers. OMG are they serious?
The reason we buy online from overseas is because our dollar is strong, even with 10% GST and shipping most things are still cheaper. If the local retailers were offering a decent fair price you'd buy locally. When BMW AU charge 3 times what a retailer in the US is, who's making money on the part too, including shipping (of one item not bulk) something is seriously farking wrong. Everything in Australia is getting so bloody expensive..

So if we use a forwarding service, do we still have to pay tax?

Replies I received:
"Thank you for your patience. I was just informed that we even though*cannot send Toyo*brand tires internationally to Australia,*we can ship comparable these brands to your location: Dunlop, Goodyear, Hoosier,*Kumho, and Sumitomo tires." I then asked about Michelin and he replied they are also prohibited from shipping them to OZ. I asked about forwarding company and he isn't sure what and if any restrictions they have. * I did get a quote from vans (tyrepower north melb) for 19" Michelin PSS 245 and 275's delivered to my door in Perth for $1950. I think it's an excellent price from Australian seller!

That's what I found amusing. For retailers who import goods and sell them over here, they make more and more money as our dollar increases, just as we get parts cheaper and cheaper. The fact that prices have stayed the same for these things whilst the dollar improves is perfect justification for us telling them where to shove it and going oversea's.... I'm not saying they should drop their prices, because that's just not how things work, but if they want to offer the same product for SO much more then they should be prepared to lose out.
