Committed one of the deadly sins of Home Ownership (purchased used hot tub)

Well guys, let the flaming begin

One of my buddies had a hot tub that he purchased used (from another buddy) and never installed it ("supposedly" still works). He told me I could have it for $200 because he needed room in the garage. Me and about seven guys are going to pick it up Thursday.

Crap pic:

I know absolutely nothing about these things so I'm probably digging myself a deep hole. Hopefully its somthing I can use for a couple of seasons and get a new one.

I'm going to reinforce the back deck (see my projects thread) and mount it there.

Anyone have any tips for me? Any advise would be greatly appreciative.

I rarely use the hot tub but it's nice to have for sure

My gf bought one.

Then she got bored with it and never used it.

They are serious energy hogs.

I would sell it for 1k and get rid of it.

They are only enjoyable in the winter. Keep kids out of it. They always piss in in no matter how much they say they won't. No one ever stores them properly so you will have leaks in the pvc manifolds. Diy repairs are not too bad, just cut the hose back and glue on new fittings. Heater elements and the wire connections going to them usually burn out. Pack the power cable acess hole with stainless steel wool to keep out rodents. Set it up so you have acess to three sides-especially for the first start up. Also the pump seals at the motor shaft will leak about every two years. Finding a good online supplier and diy ing is your best bet with a tub as old as the one you have pictured.

^ Thanks for the info. Like I mentioned, I really am planning on using it for a couple for seasons (to see if I use it as much as I hope to) before I completely redo my deck and install a new one.

I have a hot tub, like an 07' HotSprings. It costs like an extra $35/month and dude I love it. I use it about 3 times a week @ night when I'm sore from working out. They are actually quit simple products, just a heater, motor and PVC piping.

I'm thinking about picking up a hot tub, but would like to rework my patio first before I do that.
I suspect I would use it several times per week, so if I can get a decent one for $2-3k I'm going to pull the trigger.

Would it be possible to power that thing with a generator?

I too have heard they are mighty expensive to operate.

I have a small round basic hot tub on my screened in patio. Use it 5 days a week and have for years.

Stays at 104* and simple to maintain.

When chemicals get all out a whack, just drain it and fill it up again.

I know approximately squat about home-ownership, but if you could approximate...

How much do you think you spend on electricity (per month) to keep it at 104*?

I really have no idea. My electric bill really is sky high but I run the AC at 70* 24/7 and have a ton of electronics on all the time. My frickin 63" plasma pulls over 600w by itself.

In theory, it should be under $50 per month.

My hot tub plugs in the wall with regular 110v (I ran a separate circuit)

Most are 240v or gas powered. So it completely depends. Some of them stay cold and fire up to 104* in like 20 minutes.

Mine takes like 12 hours to get back to 104* after I fill it up.
