I had a FJ 80 and the damn thing was indestructible, even with the 380k miles it had on it when I sold it.

Yeah, I miss it but have a 3rd Gen 4Runner now. The FJ 80 was decked out, 8 inches of lift, plate bumpers, snorkel, water sealed, tripple battery etc.

If I was stuck in the complete wilderness, where I would die if I didn't get to where I needed to go, I would rock a Toyo over a Range Rover any day. I get RRs are tough and have a lot of tech, but aren't they notoriously unreliable? How good is your 4WD if you car is broken down.

I would expand those choices to 3. A land cruiser, a Wrangler, or a G wagon diesel. I would NEVER trust my life (in your hypothetical example) to a Land Rover. They are extremely capable, but reliability wise? Hell no.

Land Cruisers are unbelievably rugged.

Yup, and if you get the Lexus flavor, it is the most luxurious offroad capable vehicle on the planet.

In the past they've sacrificed some I the performance parts for luxury when going from the landcruiser to the Lexus version, knowing the different target buyers aren't going to be doing as much off roading as the other group. Things like softer shocks and lower ride height, etc.

X5 is better, I like the Toyota & Lexus but when you drive one, you'll know it's REALLY easy to flip. I've almost done it before

I'm not sure how you managed to flip a certain Toyota & Lexus, but the FJ80 Landcruiser in our family doesn't flip easily.

Also, I think you will be in a group of very few people if you think an 8 seater 4wheel drive SUV is supposed to compare to a 5 seater all wheel drive "SAV" with 20 inch wheels and high performance street tires.

That's really interesting because the Landcruiser I used to drive felt very much like your average SUV. I had an SR5 4Runner too.
