I agree with this. The question becomes "Is it the government's responsibility to control the masses in order to protect them from themselves"?

I say no. Let people live their lives as they'd like. If you want to become a fatty and don't have the willpower to make a better life for yourselves, eat all you want... sit as much as you want.. do as little as you please... just don't turn to me and expect me to cover the costs of your healthcare operations.

This is the problem with the nanny state... if you want it to care for your needs (healthcare for example) you can't expect them to not control how you live your life.

Again BS. There are plenty of soup kitchens all around the country. Hell, restaurants get a tax write off when they donate to organizations like City Harvest.

While I can agree that most people are ignorant of nutrition say on your level, there are no people that "KNOW" french fries and triple bacon cheeseburgers are good for them. Either you claim the majority of the population are mentally challenged (even those with brain disorders probably know lettuce is healthier than a cheesesteak) or you are just arguing for the sake of argument. People know what is healthy and what is not. The CHOICE however, is very different. Mcdonalds is cheaper than getting an organic salad with organic grilled chicken from the local deli. So yes, income has to do with the subject, but in the store, vegetables are not more expensive than prepared crap. I do the food shopping in my house, so I know how much things cost. A head of iceberg lettuce and raw whole chicken can be had for cheap. Tyson frozen chicken nuggets on the other hand are not. The reason why people feed this crap to their kids is laziness. Cooking for a family is hard work, and most don't want to do it. Hell, I don't know any women under the age of 35 today that know how to cook. Feminism FTW.

So is your theory that the government should dictate our lives to ensure that people "live better"? If so, why not have the government ration foods, mandate exercise periods, and turn off electricity to homes to ensure people are getting 8 hours of sleep? At what point do you draw a line in the name of personal liberties?

Why shouldn't Bob be allowed to get as fat as he like, smoke as much as he'd please, and do as little exercise as he can? So long as he is required to deal with the ramifications (and pay for them), I"m all for it.

FWIW, those same institutions that are suposed to be helping (SS for example) are all going belly up because they are unsustainable and politicians keep dipping their hands into those "savings accounts" to pay for other schemes aimed at buying them votes.

So does that make your idea "correct?" Is social security the "correct" solution to a problem you describe? The government basically tells people "don't bother saving, we'll pay for you to live your last years." You think that is a good solution?

It is not the duty of the US Federal, State, or Local governments to dictate how free Americans live their lives. What they eat, read, express, listen to, watch, write, drink, etc. is all protected by the US constitution. The government has become too big and bloated, entering and interfering in the lives of Americans in ridiculous ways. This soda thing is absolutely laughable, but I have to say that if people are so outraged about it, they ave to deal with it. I have no idea why Bloomberg is still in office. If the people of NYC don't like his policies, they should have elected someone else and thrown his ass out. He's an asshat. Guilliani was an absolute saint.
