OMG! NEW - Canon G15

I have been bouncing around for a while for a nice small(er) camera.

I have gone through s40,s45,s50,s60,s70,s80 & G9.

I currently use an SX260HS and 300HS, then I found a G11, and S95 at a good price on ebay and bought them to compare.

I have been debating the S100 & G12.

It seems like none of them have everything.

SX260HS = 25mm lens, 20x optical zoom, Digic 5, but no Raw and f3.5
G12 - larger lens, midsize, but Digic 4 and 28mm, and f2.8
S100 - 24mm, RAW, Digic 5, f2.0, but smaller lens, smaller body, lens issues
G1X - larger lens, larger sensor, but f2.8, expensive ($800)

I kept thinking that if they would make a G13 with the best of the G12 and the best of the S100, it would be perfect...

Well, I just stumbled across this on the Canon website...

G15. Pretty awesome specs.

If I am reading this right....it has an f/1.8 to f/2.8 lens!

Although it is only 5x zoom, f2.8 at the full telephoto is AMAZING! Pair that up with Digic 5 and the HS system and this will probably be the best low light/bokeh small camera ever made (IMO)

Looks like they went away from the articulating screen on this one. I think its bigger at 3.0" vs 2.8"?

This is pretty cool too....SX50 - 50x Optical Zoom
Canon is making it harder and harder to justify a DSLR for everyday shooting.

24mm wide
1200mm tele
Digic 5 HS
RAW
High Burst Mode
2.8" articulating screen
etc
etc

There is also the new S110...

Not much different than S100 except it has the new touch screen.

Glock.....my wife is turning 30 in a month and I want to get her a new camera. Will this fit the bill?
Canon EOS Rebel T3i

She takes graduation photos and does some engagement ones too.

There is nothing wrong with the T3i.

I would however look hard at the T4i. It has the new Digic 5 processor.

Ohhh want. I can't take an SLR everywhere, and taking photos with my phone/iPad is stupid.

Glock - I'm a photo newbie. I'm guessing this is geared more for the point and shoot crowd who wants better pictures, correct? My wife dropped our DSLR and we need a replacement, but at the same time, we never really got the hang of the camera we had. If I can get something simpler which still produces great pictures it would be ideal.

Looks like these (G15 and SX50) shoots HD video too which is a plus.

Honestly, with the new processors, I would put a G15 against the Rebel line with kit lenses all day long. There are things DSLRs can do better, but not if its left at home.

I have a 60D and 15-85mm and 70-300mm and 50mm and 430EXII and 270EXII.

That is about $2500 worth of gear and I would use the G15 or S110 75-90% of the time I need a camera.

Heck, I love my new SX260HS and it is on sale at Best Buy for like $250!

If you WANT a DSLR or NEED a DSLR buy one, if you want great pics, there are other options (especially if you leave your DSLR in Auto or Portrait mode.)

DSLRs shine with EXPENSIVE lenses. I would take a $500 G15 over a $500 DSLR as is all day long.

As always, JMO.

Glockman, why not carry around a micro 4/3? My younger sister recently bought an Olympus Pen for ~$350.

Cameras under $2000 can use ANY canon lens.

Cameras above $2000 can use ANY non-EFS lens.

Thanks for the input. I wish I had the time to get fully proficient with the DSLR, but in reality, it hasn't happened and won't likely be a priority.

It sounds like I'm better off getting one of the more powerful P&S cameras since I carry one 75% of the time anyway.

Look at the SX50 when it comes out. It is like a hybrid between a point and shoot and a DSLR. It should be around $500.

It has a 50x optical zoom. That would be about 12" worth of lens on a DSLR. lol. It also has a very wide 24mm.

So remember your kit lens? probably 18-55mm - That is 24mm-90mm ish. This one is 24mm - 1200mm ish. lol

Anyway, for someone who does not demand a DSLR, it might be a really great camera for you.

The body isn't even the biggest investment. You can spend more than $10k on a single lens if you really wanted to. But on the bright side you can sell it 5 years later for 90% of what you paid for it, if not more.

It really is not about the controls, the G15, and S110, etc will have the DSLR controls. It is about the expensive glass with a DSLR. Cheap glass on a DSLR is not any better than cheap glass on a pocket camera.

I use my pocket cameras all the time on manual controls. That is the difference between a $99 pocket camera and a $449 S110 pocket camera. You can 99% as much on a G or S line camera as a DSLR then upgrade later when it really matters and keep the G or S as your backup or travel.

I had like 6 S line cameras and a G9 before my first DSLR.

Here is a link to pictures taken with a $499 Canon G12...
