Thumbs Up How To Integrate A 7" Tablet To Your E46 Sound System

Whats up fellas here is a great DIY that Dan from BMDroid did on his E46. In this DIY he explains how he integrated a 7" tablet into his existing car stereo so he could have an infotainment system. It sure is a whole lot cheaper than buying the Dynavin unit I believe the total cost was around $400 or so im not sure maybe cheaper, anyways here is the link to his DIY page enjoy and don't forget to make a donation to him if you use his method. http://www.bmdroid.co.nz/

Seems like you loose the option to change your radio controls, power, volume, track selection, and also what about audio out on the tablet?

All these android infotainment systems are nonsense imo, including dynavin.

Agreed, you might as well buy a sink.

An Aux input and a smartphone will do everything a Dynavin can do, minus DVD playing, plus you can take it with you.

This!

Plus, you won't walk up to your car one day with your window smashed and your tablet and/or nav gone. Granted not all of us live in a bad neighborhood, but there are Asholes everywhere.

Otherwise good idea. Looks like a fun DIY

I personally think this is a much better solution, lots of android support and roms too. A nexus 7 is only $200 too.

I nearly pulled the trigger on a nexus 7 last night for just this reason, but I'm still tossing up between that and running my old carputer.
Either way I'm ditching the dynavin.

The way I was planning to do it was trunk mounting a headunit that has the capability to have dual bluetooth connections and work with e46 steering controls. Streaming audio from the tablet to the HU which will allow volume control and track skip via swc and then also have my phone also connect to the HU bluetooth so I don't lose handsfree capability.

Tie it all together with an app called tablet talk so I can make and receive calls via the tablet screen.

The only drawback is that I would need to have a trunk mounted wifi router with NAS so I could have a decent amount of storage for the tablet, puts the carputer slightly ahead at the moment.

Still weighting up my options....

Exclamation

The tablet talk app looks very nice and cool. I currently have a Motorola t605 hands free system which I use for calls and streaming music.
Seems like with the app I can get rid of the whole system and just play music via Google music.

The $200 tablet price is definitely more attracted than the dynavin which doesn't have many ROMs to choose from and seems to still have issues.

$200 for the tablet + $150 for the fascia + however you're going to integrate it into the stereo + the time you're going to spend working on it.

You don't come out too far ahead in terms of cost.

Well its $200 for the tablet, $150 for the fascia and another $50 for the HVAC relocation.
I already have the OEM aux input so that'll plug right in and USB car chargers are super cheap now a days. That puts it at around ~$400-$450.

The dynavin d99 with android is $849 +$50 for the HVAC relocation which puts it at $899.

I also prefer being able to flash jellybean on the tablet.

Dynavins are still that expensive? I should stay more in the loop.
Either way, I'm sick of mine and in need of a change.

Hey ... I just joined the forum today, but Ive been reading this forum and a lot of others for a long time. I JUST installed a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 in my e46 coupe. I did a LOT of research and used ideas that other folks shared. I want to give back, so I created a blog that takes you through my entire install in words and pics. Here's the link http://droidmw.blogspot.com/ I also included a couple of quick pics here. Let me know what you all think!

Nice DIY!

Now if someone with nav would go ahead and take the time to do the same thing, except with an iPad mini... That would be great...

My Ride: 330ci convertable
Hi newbie here,

This is what I'm doing right now, I'm installing a blackberry playbook in my 330ci convertible. Going to be a special home built bezel as well as the play book has an active bezel. It's only just going to fit. The play book was only 129 pound for 64gb

Will post some pics when I get half way with it
