Hmm, BMW and Mercedes have always offered a lot of engine and bodystyle configurations for each of their model lines, and BMW also had an M-Sport line in the late seventies/early eighties. I would say the Japanese trimmed down or stayed the same, and the domestics kinda stayed the same, but at least actually styled the cars somewhat differently and gave them different names.
