Headlights

I have a 1999 323i E46 and the headlights only come on when it's really dark outside, how do I make them come on when I want them to?

If you're talking about the dial that controls the lights, that doesn't turn them on.

Are you saying that you have auto lights, and that the light switch only works in the auto position?
At night, can you turn them off by moving the switch from auto to off? What happens in the park position?
In the auto position, will the headlights come on if you press the fog light button?

Are you talking about the headlights, or some aftermarket add-on lights?

They're not LED.

At night when you turn them to the on position do they stay on or do they cut off. It could be something with the LCM.

Are you talking about your low beams? Those aren't LED (at least they shouldn't be unless you fit LED bulbs in there and have extremely poor light output at night). The option to manually turn on your low beams should always be present, it's a safety thing.

The rotatory headlight switch is kind of interesting. It's two single throw, single pole switches configured in a binary code arrangement.

Position--S1-------S2

Auto------closed---open
Off-------closed---closed
Park------open-----closed
On--------open-----open

If S1 were to be shorted, you would still have auto lights but couldn't turn them on manually.

You could get a used LCM, and then just swap the front (switch) part of it and not have to worry about coding.
