Is a E46 with FI a super car?

I am just wondering how people would define a super car and if a M3 with a HPF kit or a AA kit (or any other kit one could name) would classify as a "super car" in their book.

Not at all

Back when the e39 m5 was made, a sub-5 second 0-60 was considered super car territory, and many considered it to be one.

Now I think super car territory is <4 seconds for a 0-60 time.

Just my 2 cents.

I think I remember caranddriver describing anything over 120k as a "supercar". Some people think it's 0-60 time, others think it's entry price.

When I hear "Supercar" I think exotic, I would not classify an ///M3 or M5 an exotic. Rare yes but exotic no...

Watch some Top Gear, Clarkson will show you how to differentiate the two.

It can't be a supercar without exclusivity.

When there are teenagers driving m3's on here it's not ever going to be a supercar

I wouldn't consider R8 a super car either. These foreign government official's wankster sons driving these sub $150,000 "supercars" around the school parking lot

No way. It is a fast car, but far from a super car. Just like a 69 camaro with a blown motor that does 10 seconds in the 1/4 is a very fast car, but not a super car.

Super cars in my book are cars that have a high entry price, were at the top of their game during the era they ran off the production line, and are exclusive vehicles. I.E. in my book a countach is still a super car even though a new vette which is not a supercar out performs it.

Also, and this is key, you cannot turn a car into a super car, it is born that way.

+1

I would rather own a perfectly modded sports car than a super car or exotic though

I rather be poor and drive a 12 years old BMW than be rich.

sub 3.5 seconds 0-60 and exclusivety means super car... V8 R8 isn' a supercar... A V10 R8 is... GTR is relatively cheap... in my book a supercar...
The new M5/M6 is tricky.. i think out of the box they are no supercars..
But look at what many of us did with the 335i/135i it went from 300hp to 500hp with just a few mods.. if we can do that with the new M5/M6 and make it into the 800+hp monster, and it has the factory option of Crbon Ceramic brakes i think it might graduate into a supercar territory..

It's a little like what Louis Armstrong said about jazz: if you have to ask, you'll never know.
BMW hasn't made a supercar since the M1.

A well setup FI E46 could be in the just sub-supercar bracket. For example competing (on the track) with the likes of the Boss 302, some E90 M3s, CLK63s, the V8 Vantage, and maybe even the R8.

Speed/0-60/top speed/ect alone to me do not qualify as supercar! Look at nitro cars! Anyone consider these supercars? Anything can be modified to be a sub 10second car and run a 4s 0-60 with the right money and driver.. I consider supercars to be an out of the box Monster, something that you don't see everyday, has an intimidating look. I love the R35 GTR but in my mind this is not a supercar. I also own a toyota supra (94tt 6 speed) and there is an article I have on it where caranddriver tested it (in its 94 entry year) against a porsche *forget what one sorry* and a ferrari testorosa. Although the supra won the overall ratings, and a lot of single events they stated it just isn't in the same ballgame as the porsche and ferrari. To me I have the same feeling (I have friends with 900rwhp supras) and they are not supercars.. Sure they can own them in most cases but it still isn't a supercar!

My Ride: M3 HPF Stage 3
I agree with the general consensus of conclusions in this thread.

One question:
Someone said, you cant MAKE a regular high performance car IN to a supercar. There is a lot of merit to that statement. Yet I always wondered...

HPF had a TON of money dumped in that Pearl White Asuka wide body stage 4. Does anybody think that particular car might be an EXCEPTION and qualify as a Supercar? It was terrifically Expensive, had incredible power, exclusivity and bordered on what you would call "exotic". Some hated the look actually, but it still had an exotic flare to it. The pearl white paint was an eye catcher too.
I never referred to it as a "Supercar" but often wondered if it would pass as one.
I guess I will finally find out what everyone thinks about it in this thread. Doesn't matter to me. But I am glad someone finally came out and asked the question.

And dont some cars LOOSE their Supercar status? Take the Ferrari 348 or the Testarossa Those cars dont have all that much power and acceleration today as many medium level sport cars or muscle cars. They were considered Supercars in their day. Will that moniker follow them until eternity? Maybe. I dont know for sure. What do you guys think? I guess you could say "I own an 80's or 90's Supercar." I suppose that would work.

So far, the only times I use "HPF" and "Supercar" in the same sentence: "That HPF Stage 3 BMW M3 will beat almost any unmodified Supercar on the road today, with a few exceptions."
