I drained a half of a gallon of oil before removing my RMS just in case (especially, in my case the front was higher than the rear). I have Fumoto valve installed, so it was easy for me to drain as much as I want.

Is there a crankshaft seal or anything else in that area that could leak?

Oil pan gasket seconded, I had significant leakage in the rear oil pan area, including up inside where the two recessed bolts are, I figured to do the oil pan gasket first to be sure then the rear main if it still leaked.
So far its been three months and it is dry as a bone, I am stoked that I don't have to pull the transmission. With 250k miles I thought for sure it would be the seal but it wasn't. |

Bav auto makes a awesome kit for a clutch job this is what it includes, Our kit contains: an alignment tool, clutch disc, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, rear engine seal, pilot bearing, all transmission seals, exhaust gaskets, and a pivot pin. All our clutch components are manufactured by the original equipment supplier to BMW.
I used this kit on my car, changing Trans seals was easy to. I used 2 sheet metal screws on ether side of the seals and pulled on one side then the other and walked it out little by little. I strongly recommend this kit. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Bimmer App |

A bit more expensive, but much easier to replace the whole cover:
http://www.thebmwpartstore.com/oempa...141438274.html ![]() Even cheaper, but no idea what 'OE supplier' means: http://www.bmaparts.com/item.wws?sku...ER&weight=1.17
