Agreed top gear is a good starting point. But i know people have "in the zone" driving days and bad ones. Even the great stig ive seen it happen too. And tires have alot to do with it and true about nurburgring example. It used to be all about speed for me but i guess i just like the way m3 transitions and balances. I drove 5 laps in each in porsche 997 turbo s, lamborghini super lp570, mclaren mp4-12c and ferrari italia plus years of everything under that. I find the m3 to be the best overall balance of everything of course in my price range. Pretty hard to compare it to ferrari 458

The other thing to keep in mind with any track test is that both weather and track conditions will vary from day to day, and this can have a notable impact on lap times. The long and short of it is that anybody who uses test numbers as their primary qualifier for car selection should stick to driving their X-boxes in their living rooms.
