I got in touch with the guy concerned in Salzgitter Germany. An electronic engineer called Eduard Klukas. There are several mostly German language forums for BMW cars using the GM box which mostly validated his claims.
I've now been running his mod to my gearbox control module for about a month and it does what he claims. I'm very satisfied and getting around 5-10 % better fuel mileage overall

how much does he charge for the service? and all i would have to do is remove my tcm and ship it to him?

He covers all that at his site in English and German. elzin@gmx.de
I suggest you not write to him in English however.

On my E39 530d getting the TCM unclipped from the E-box was the hardest part but once I worked out how to do this the entire process takes 10 minutes.
