Interior Shift Trim

I searched Google & E46F for the trick to reinstalling the shifter trim after wrapping it but can't find anything. The trim is in, secured with the screws and looks fine, but toward the front around the ashtray area there is a gap where it is not sitting flush. Anyone know the trick?

Wrapping this piece takes up space that the, I call them little plastic L shaped pieces, because too much pressure and they will break off. When reinstalling, must slide in at about 45 degree angle, applying pressure evenly above the location of the L clip. Once there slide gently forward a quarter of an inch or so. Run you finger in the front. If no gaps, lower rear and install the two retaining screws. If you look at the lip I front of the ashtray where the two meet you will see the corresponding notches the L's fit. I had same issue after wrapping mine in black leather. Had to shave down the back of the leather a bit not to risk breaking the L's. If still gap, pull out and retry, even trimming out the covering material within the L's to allow more room.
