Dynavin "D99 PLUS"

Dynavin has made some running changes to their D99 platform Audio/Video/Navigation Systems, some of you who are particularly perceptive may have already noticed. Although most of the changes are subtle, they make for a more refined, easier to set up unit and that makes for happier users! (and less work for me) This new updated model is known as the D99 PLUS (D99+). As always, they are available in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit the BMW E46, E39, E53, E9X, E8X and an assortment of Audi, VW, and Mercedes models.

Although they have been shipping for months in certain models the roll out has been somewhat slow. Dynavin has not been making much noise about it, probably because up until recently it didn't cover all models, I expect they will be promoting these soon. THIS IS NOT AN UPDATE FOR OLDER D99 UNITS, it is a mostly similar but in many ways new unit (think iphone4 to iphone4S). If you bought a D99 in the last couple months you probably already have one of these and didnt realize it!

....and the best part? The price went DOWN....

Its time to open a discussion about these units as they are different enough to warrant their own thread and Q&A. As always lets try to keep this a Q&A, try to keep the thread informative, factual, and useful. Keep the speculation and opinions out of it.

So you ask, what is the "+" in D99 PLUS?


CD/DVD/USB/SD Screens Cosmetics

The CD/DVD/USB/SD screens now share the same basic cosmetic theme as the rest of the unit, black backgrounds, white letters, red or orange colorings. Previous offerings have always had a few different cosmetic looks depending on the source but now everything pretty much looks similar.




Reverse Functions

With the D99+ the reverse, backup camera, PDC (oem parking sensors), and their related audio settings are all configurable, you can even do a combination of features, like having the PDC graphic overlay the backup camera screen. While in reverse mode you can have the audio mute or only reduce its volume, you can also have the PDC beep (on vehicles where PDC is built into the stock audio system). Note the added settings (in the "hidden" factory settings menu). If you have none of these you can also just turn it all off.




Here is a short video showing some various setups you can have when the car is in reverse, first a backup camera, then PDC alone, then Camera AND PDC.




Password Theft Deterrence

Now the usefulness of this might be debatable, or maybe Im missing something.... I dont think Ive ever heard of a Dynaivn theft, and a password lock isnt going to keep it from being stolen, but it will keep someone from using it. In the WinCE units this doesnt really matter but I suppose in the android versions it would keep a thief out of your android apps that might have sensitive info. The password lock is not something you use every time, it comes into play when power is removed from the unit, once power is restored to the unit it will require a password.





Improved Bluetooth Phone Integration:

Dynavin is still using the Parrot bluetooth system but has changed a few things.
Minor feature but your paired phone's signal strength and charge level now display at the top of the screen on the audio screens, (or at least it does with the phones Ive tried). Bluetooth streaming audio quality is now almost indistinguishable from being plugged in (although the D99 was pretty good too).



AND NOW A BIG ONE, those of you who have been following dynavin for a long time know that there has ALWAYS been an issue with using streaming bluetooth and the nav system at the same time, there were workarounds but basically you needed to plug in to use your phone for music when also using the nav. NO MORE! Finally you can stream your audio from your phone AND use the nav system at the same time.


New Touchscreen

Small change here, only a change in the sensitivity of the touchscreen. Looks exactly the same.



Etc...
Plus a bunch of small changes in the name of refinement and stability. None of this is some huge game changer of a feature, but it combines to make the units easier to integrate into a given vehicle, and ties up a lot of loose ends for a more satisfying user experience.

UPDATE: Igo Primo Navigation Program.

Working with Dynavin we are now able to install licensed iGo Primo on our Dynavin units. This program has long been a favorite of the "hacker community" and now Im glad to say we can now offer it to everybody in a legit legal way. The licenses are not cheap but we are now including Primo with all of our Dynavin WinCE units. This also greatly simplifies things like future map updates etc... as iGo is well established and has an easy upgrade path available via their website www.naviextras.com

The version that iGo offers us is just the basic North American map program, They offer additional features like premium POIs, 3D buildings, additional maps, etc... on their website www.naviextras.com. All upgrades and updates are done through that site and iGo's "toolbox" using your computer and the dynavin's map SD card.

Hey, i just recieved my dynavin! Installation was a breeze as usual. I was just wondering if the streaming functions with the new bluetooth system were the same as the older units where you were able to switch tracks using the units display and the steering wheel controls? Neither of them are working with my Iphone 4. Also i just wanted to thank you for the speedy shipping. -PAT BECK

Yes the streaming is the same BUT I noticed that when I installed iOS 6 on my iphone I lost the track button functionality via bluetooth.....so I suspect its a bug in iOS 6 as it worked fine with iOS 5.

It will work the same on an E46 assuming it has factory installed PDC.

Figured it was iOS 6. Funny though it still does work on my older unit in my 330. iOS sucks anyway. I'm gonna uninstall. Haha.

I still need to mess around with it....delete, re-pair, etc....before I can say for sure that its iOS 6. But considering all the changes they made with the Podcast app etc... it wouldn't surprise me if something got broke somewhere.

How's the phonebook integration and ipod playlist track sorting - does it still sort by alpha instead of playlist order?

curious if anyone else has the issues where the screen pixelates in areas and stays all blocked out until you touch that spot. its annoying big time!

and i my iPhone 4 pairs every time perfectly but i cant get the Navi side to connect to it for internet and such. not sure why. and one last question... doesnt sound like the stereo plays full volume and then when i turn the ignition off it cracks to full volume for a split second as the power shuts off. any idea what causes this? i feel like its all programming and me not setting something up right. but it seems self explanatory..

Still no hd radio and satellite radio? Any plans to get current in the USA?

I have the same problem with the volume shutting off. I'd like to about that as well.

+1, satellite radio is a must for me

If I sell my alpine IWA910R, and get my BMW 328Ci, I think I'll get this dynavin. though I'm only searching for a good cd reader/iphone lossless file reader, since I'll plug three genesis amp and Brax matrix 3 way hp...

If only that thing would have an optical out, to plug an audison bit one for example, it would be perfect.

I really wonder if one good solution would be:

Get a D99 plus, and insert in the middle a plug and play solution like HELIX PP50 DSP or match PP82 DSP.
That will allow a very good amp, and dsp fonctions, things that are missing on a dynavin.
the dynavin would then be use only for the on screen display.

I have seen this on a few cars and while I dont really understand it, I have found that its related to the cars ibus interfering with the dynaivn units screen via the OBC/PDC function. Reprogramming the ibus box with the alternate programming that removes these functions, seems to fix the issue. Dynavin is working on a more targeted fix but if your car does not have PDC (most E46s dont) then you are only loosing the OBC screen.

Connection to android is via wifi, not bluetooth. Your phone needs to be capable of creating a wifi hotspot.

Is the AMP setting in the factory settings menu set to none or common, is your setup all stock or do you have aftermarket components?

In my personal car I have a dynavin and a JBL MS-8 that does all the sound processing, works good as the dynavin looks and acts like a stock unit, but I still have all my high end sound processing with the MS-8. The MS-8 has an Aux in for a direct connection, I compared it to feeding the sound in via the dynavin and couldnt really tell much of a difference so I just use the dynavin as my source for everything now.

Apple lightning to 30 pin adapter has officially begun to ship -- Can someone who has purchased one confirm it still works with this unit, while maintaining all previous functionality? According to forums, there are mixed results to whether or not it will work with the given accessory.

Please advise

I have few Q's for you? Do you ship to Australia?

Also I will need the climate control relocation kit for my M3 but RHD. Do you have them? Also previous owner had an aftermarket Alpine flip out screen which he removed. Looks like he cut off the plug for the factory H/U connections. Is there a way I can get it so I can attach a Dynavin unit easily?
