Thinking about DIYing rusted hood, opinions?
hey so ive had my 325i sedan for a while now and was thinking about rusting my hood. been wanting to for a while. i think it looks really clean
is it hard to do? i have sand paper and some random chemicals i found in my garage and figured it shouldnt be too hard to remove the paint and rust it up something clean like this one |

i dont understand the rust thing. first glance at that pic and honestly it looks like crap on a bmw that sorta thing should be left for civics where rust comes naturally. Just my own opinion. Do what you like I guess
But why would you want to purposly rust ur car?

My friend did this to his Honda in high school. Said it was the next "cool thing". Thank goodness he did this to a spare hood and was able to put his clean white hood back on after 1 week when he realized how stupid and ***** it looked. If your hell bent, he sanded it down and we covered it in very salty water mixture and wrapped it in black trash bags and set it out in direct sunlight. Then every night that we drank we walked out and p!ssed on it. Turned out perfect, well perfectly ruined.

Eh it was all uniform and sh!tty all over I guess lol I started the "p!ssing match", if you will, as a joke then everyone did it as the nights progressed (no sword fighting sadly). It all ran off quickly anyway because of how it was angled.

Interesting.
I get what you're trying to do.. shooting for that patina Steampunk look. ![]() Now are you going to get the engine bay to match? |

lol, you'll risk getting tetanus every time you open the hood! Seriously though, make sure you also get those hideous orange wheels to match the hood.
Sorry dude, me no likey. |

I think you need some clarification on what the term "clean" means

Terrible idea - and probably much harder than you think it is. Brushing an entire hood until all the clear coat, paint, & primer are gone? No thanks. Worst mod I've seen thus far. |

I try keep rust away from my car. Just goes to help prove there are different strokes for different folks. If you want that look. You have to remove hood, and all chrome. Sand to bare metal. Wait. or cheat and use salt water. Then put the chrome back on. I recommend trying it with a junk yard hood in case you change your mind. That way you have a good one in case you want to change back.
I'm really tempted to paint my truck with flat camouflage paint. |

rusty hood
OK First do you have a spare hood? Because this is going to destroy your hood, to go back to what it looks like now its going to take a whole lot of bondo n time, say $175 to $200 but if your ready. First sand it down with 40 grit, thats really goin to get to the metal fast, then hit it with 80 grit, after hit it wit 180 grit to smooth it out, sand in circles after wet it down in the sun leave it everytime you see dry mist it with a water from a spray bottle. jUST Remember your hood is going to feel real ruff n your going to get a lot of rust dust so you'll have to wipe it down everyday before you take off. So good luck hope you get what you want! BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR BECAUSE YOU MIGHT JUST GET IT!
