I have a few pounds of fresh mackerel and have no idea how to cook it
I went out on a charter boat over the weekend for a friend's bachelor party and we caught more fish than we know what to do with. Personally I have maybe 5 or 6 pounds of it. I know frying is an option, but what else is out there?

Sashimi! Saba is the bomb. It's oily and salty and has a great fish flavor. Make some sushi rice and put together a monster chirashi bowl.
Or grill them whole. Cut a couple of slices on each side, salt them and then grill them over charcoal. Serve with some teriyaki sauce and a side of miso soup. Dang, now I'm hungry! Last edited by brew; 10-16-2012 at 01:44 PM. |

I'll probably end up frying most of it. We got a restaurant at the marina to fry some up for us the night we caught them and they were delicious. I'm not a huge fan of real fishy flavors and frying seems to hide that well. A friend of mine who goes out fishing pretty regularly said he likes to smoke them too.

king? spanish? atlantic?
but i would say either poach or smoke it. you could also just take some herbs and butter and stuff it. wrap it in aluminum foil and throw it in the oven. but mackerel has a distinct flavor and its oily. i say poach and make a spread.

King. When you say it has a distinct flavor, is it really fishy? Also, it won't hurt to freeze it, will it?

I think the stuff they generally sell at sushi restaurants is Spanish mackerel . . . and it's pretty fishy stuff. But in a good way. You owe it to yourself to at least try some sashimi style.

I'll give it a shot. I've tried to like sushi in the past and it doesn't sit well with me.

Yes...I do think I hate you

Mackerel spoils quickly, i'd just cook it instead of using it for sashimi/sushi unless you know what you're doing.
