2002 BMW 330i Engine rattle/ticking [Video included]
Hey fanatics!
Long time lurker and reader, but I haven't posted much. I'm having an engine sound issue with my beloved 330i. Long story short, after initial start-up there is a persistent rattle or clicking sound coming from the engine. It appears to come on once the car has sufficiently warmed up. I've had the car for a little over a year now and have been trying to diagnose the problem as best as I could. I'm not sure what kind of oil the previous owner has been putting in, but I just replaced the VANOS seals and rattle rings (kit from BeisanSystems) and at the same time I did an oil change. I put Royal Purple 5W-30 (please don't flame me for not using BMW certified LL-01 oil ;P) into the engine, as I had a bunch of it laying around from before so I figured it would be okay to use in the bimmer. End result is still the same though. I have also tried unplugging the DISA unit as some posters have suggested, but that didn't appear to help. I've uploaded a video onto YouTube so you guys can get a better idea of the issue: I'd greatly appreciate any input and help from you guys, thanks! |

Still have the problem since October? I suggest you buy a mechanics stethescope and try to pin point the source of the noise. My first guess would be a lifter or injector, but it could be a number of things. Does it go away when you rev the engine?

Thanks for the suggestion; I will take it to my brothers shop and see if he can find the location of the noise as he probably has a stethoscope.
Ya, it goes away once you rev the engine and then comes back during idle. |
